Greece on the Agri-Food Map

Greece is the third largest producer of olive oil in the world and a RIS country of EIT Food, playing a pivotal role in the European agri-food ecosystem.

The agri-food sector:

  • Is a key pillar of the Greek economy.
  • Is supported by the country’s mild climate and rich agricultural heritage.
  • It accounts for over 30% of Greek exports.

Despite its strong foundations, the Greek agri-food ecosystem faces challenges, such as:

  • The limited collaboration between universities, research institutions, and businesses.
  • The need to strengthen innovation and applied technologies.
  • The increase of productivity and adopting sustainable practices.

EIT Food, through the EIT Food Hub, is ideally positioned to support the systematic development of the sector in Greece by strengthening its connection with European developments.
